Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security access items
Start with items that could open a door or identify an address. Check the visor, cupholders, center console, door pockets, key rings, and any storage tray. Remove garage-door remotes, gate fobs, spare house keys, mailbox keys, storage-unit keys, and neighborhood access cards. If a spare house key is hidden inside, remove it now.
Stop billing items
Next, remove anything that can keep charging after the tow truck leaves. Pull the toll transponder or toll sticker if it can be removed without damage. Then log in to the toll account and remove the vehicle or tag from that account. Also take out paid parking hangtags, garage cards, fuel cards, fleet cards, and car-wash membership tags.
Clear documents and papers
Open the glovebox, console, door pockets, and seat-back pockets. Remove your insurance card, registration copy, maintenance receipts, finance papers, repair estimates, maps with notes, and any document with your name, address, phone number, account number, or signature. Keep personal records with you. Do not use the glovebox as storage for the title unless it is already signed over and meant to stay with the car.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Do a slow left-to-right sweep. Look under both front seats, between cushions, behind floor mats, in seat-back pockets, under child-seat areas, in visors, in the center console, and in all door bins. Then check the trunk, cargo pockets, spare-tire well, tool kit area, and emergency-kit space. Remove coins, sunglasses, chargers, medications, clothing, and personal keepsakes.
Wipe saved electronic data
Before the car leaves, factory-reset the infotainment system if the battery and screen still work. Delete Bluetooth pairings, contacts, call history, navigation destinations, garage-door HomeLink settings, Wi-Fi connections, apps, and the saved home address. Menus vary by vehicle, so use the owner’s manual if needed. If the reset fails, manually delete what the screen still lets you access.
Remove optional aftermarket items
Take aftermarket items only if removal is simple and does not change the vehicle from what you described. You may remove dash cams, phone mounts, upgraded speakers, removable stereos, cargo organizers, bike racks, and child seats. Leave factory parts, required safety equipment, and attached components in place. If removal would leave damage, exposed wiring, or missing panels, leave it alone.
Leave transfer items
The keys stay with the car. Put the main key, fob, and any needed door, trunk, or wheel-lock key where the driver can find them. The signed-over title also stays with the car. Final checks before pickup day
Put removed items in one bag so they do not end up back in the vehicle. Take quick photos of the empty console, trunk, and glovebox if that helps you remember the sweep.
