Cancel Insurance After Donating Your Car in Charleston

In the Charleston Metro, keep insurance active until pickup and title hand-off are done, then cancel using that date.

Cancel insurance only after your donated car has been picked up and the title hand-off is complete. Do not cancel before pickup. Until that hand-off, you may still legally own the car, and an early cancellation can leave you exposed to an uninsured loss. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered. If required, complete plate or registration steps with the South Carolina DMV first. Then ask your insurer to end coverage effective on the pickup/title-transfer date.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm pickup and title hand-off

Before changing insurance, make sure the vehicle has actually left your possession and the title was handed off as part of the donation. Use the pickup date and title-transfer date as your key records. If pickup is imminent but not finished, keep coverage active. Cancelling early can create a gap while the car is still tied to you.

2

Handle plates and registration first

Before you call your insurer, check whether your plates or registration need action. State systems vary: some require plates to be surrendered or registration cancelled before insurance is cancelled; others use a sale, transfer, or release process. Follow the rule that applies to your record, and contact the South Carolina DMV if you are unsure. Keep any receipt or confirmation with your donation file.

3

Call with the donation date

Call your insurance company after pickup and title hand-off are complete. Tell the representative the vehicle was donated and give the effective date as the pickup/title-transfer date. Have your policy number, VIN, donation paperwork, and title hand-off record nearby. Ask the representative to note that you are not asking for an earlier cancellation date.

4

Remove or cancel coverage

If the donated vehicle is on a multi-car policy, ask to remove only that vehicle and keep the other vehicles covered. If it was your only car on the policy, ask to cancel the policy effective on the donation date. If you will drive or buy another vehicle soon, keep continuous coverage in mind so you do not create an avoidable coverage gap.

5

Request any prepaid refund

If you paid ahead, ask whether a prorated premium refund is due from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund timing and method depend on your policy and billing status. Confirm whether the refund will go back to your card, be mailed as a check, or be applied to any remaining balance on the account.

6

Keep written confirmation

Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, VIN, effective date, and whether the policy was cancelled or the vehicle was removed. Save it with your title, donation receipt, plate or registration confirmation, and tax records. Also keep our separate release-of-liability guide on your checklist so your ownership records are closed out in the right order.

If pickup is still pending

If your vehicle is still in your driveway, parking lot, or garage, do not cancel yet. Keep the same coverage in place until pickup and title hand-off are complete, even if you have already signed donation paperwork. A theft, collision, storm loss, or damage claim before hand-off can become complicated if coverage has already been stopped. Once the car is gone and the title has been transferred, move through the plate, registration, insurance, refund, and confirmation steps in order.

Common questions

Can I cancel insurance on the same day as pickup?

Yes, if pickup has happened and the title hand-off is complete. Ask the insurer to use that date as the effective date. If pickup is scheduled for later in the day, wait until the vehicle is actually gone and the hand-off is complete before making the insurance change.

Will I get money back after cancelling?

Many policies return unused prepaid premium when a vehicle is removed or a policy is cancelled before the paid-through date. The amount depends on your billing status and policy terms. Ask for a prorated refund and confirm where it will be sent or credited.

What if my insurance is on autopay?

Tell the insurer the vehicle was donated and ask them to stop future charges tied to that vehicle or policy. If it is a multi-car policy, verify the new premium for the remaining vehicles. Save the written billing confirmation and watch the next statement.
