When you donate a car to Wheels of Hope in Charleston, you don’t have to drive it anywhere—we come to you. From downtown Charleston and West Ashley to Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, James Island, and Goose Creek, our local towing partners pick up your vehicle where it sits, running or not. Pickup is genuinely free: $0 to you, with the towing cost covered from the charity’s sale proceeds and never billed back to you later.
Here’s how it works locally: you call or submit our online form, we confirm your Charleston-area address and set a pickup window that fits your schedule. On pickup day, you simply leave the signed South Carolina title and keys in the vehicle (or a safe spot you tell us about). A local flatbed or hook-and-chain truck—often based right in Charleston Metro—arrives within a few business days, depending on how busy routes are and how rural your address is (for example, Johns Island, Awendaw, or rural Berkeley County can take a bit longer). The driver loads your vehicle, handles the paperwork handoff, and you’re done.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Request your free pickup online or by phone
Share your basic vehicle details and where it’s parked in the Charleston area—whether that’s downtown, Daniel Island, Summerville, or a condo complex in Mount Pleasant. We’ll confirm that pickup is available at your address and answer any questions about timing, titles, and what to do if the car doesn’t run or has flat tires.
2. Choose a convenient pickup window
We’ll work with you to schedule a pickup window that matches your availability and the towing routes in Charleston Metro. Urban spots like downtown, West Ashley, and North Charleston typically see faster routing; more rural areas such as Ravenel or Wadmalaw Island may add a day or two. We’ll give you a realistic estimate so you know what to expect.
3. Prepare your South Carolina title and keys
Before your pickup day, locate your South Carolina vehicle title and remove personal items from the car. We’ll explain where you should sign the title as the seller/donor. On the day, you can leave the signed title and keys in the vehicle or in a secure place you’ve described to us, so the tow driver can complete the handoff even if you’re not home.
4. Make the vehicle accessible for a flatbed or tow
Park the vehicle where a tow truck can safely reach it—ideally on a driveway, open curb, or accessible lot. If it’s in a tight historic downtown street, apartment complex, parking garage, or HOA community, let us know any gate codes, parking rules, or clearance limits so we can assign the right type of truck and avoid delays on arrival.
5. Meet the driver or donate contact-free
You’re welcome to meet the driver, but it isn’t required if we already have title arrangements. Our local towing partner will load your car using a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck, have you sign any remaining paperwork if you’re present, and then tow it away at no cost to you. The entire pickup usually takes just a few minutes once the truck is on-site.
6. Receive your donation receipt and tax paperwork
After your vehicle is sold, Wheels of Hope mails you a receipt. In most cases you can claim at least a $500 deduction; if the sale value is over $500, you’ll also receive IRS Form 1098-C for your records. Keep this with your tax paperwork and consult a tax professional if you have questions about how to claim your deduction.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight downtown Charleston streets and historic alleys
Tip: Some streets on the peninsula and in the historic district are narrow or one-way, making flatbed access tricky. If your car is tucked behind a house, in a courtyard, or on a tight street, let us know in advance. We may ask you to move it to a more accessible curb or lot nearby to avoid rescheduling.
Gate codes, parking garages, and HOA communities
Tip: Apartment complexes in North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, or West Ashley and gated communities in places like Daniel Island or Kiawah often require codes or passes. Share any gate codes, parking passes, or HOA rules with us when you schedule. Many garages also have low clearance that some trucks can’t enter, so we may need the car at street level.
Very rural or barrier-island addresses
Tip: Homes on Johns Island, Wadmalaw, Ravenel, or further out toward Awendaw and McClellanville are absolutely eligible, but tow trucks may not run those routes daily. Being flexible on your pickup window helps us route a truck efficiently and can cut down on delays, especially after storms or during very busy weeks across the Charleston Metro area.
Missing title or name mismatch on the SC title
Tip: If you can’t find your South Carolina title or the name on it doesn’t match who is donating the car, pickup can be delayed. Contact us before scheduling so we can explain options and what the SC DMV may require to replace a lost title or handle name changes, saving you an extra trip or rescheduled tow.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is difficult—for example, your vehicle is buried in a parking garage downtown, blocked in a shop bay, or kept on property with strict HOA rules—we can usually work out another local option. In some cases, you may be able to meet our tow truck at a nearby public lot or wider street in West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, or near a major road like I-26 or US-17. If the car is still drivable and you prefer, we can also arrange for you to drop it at a partner location by appointment in the greater Charleston Metro area.
Charleston pickup coverage
Wheels of Hope arranges free pickup throughout Charleston and much of coastal South Carolina, including downtown Charleston, West Ashley, James and Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Hanahan, Goose Creek, Summerville, and nearby communities. More rural Lowcountry addresses may add a day or two to routing, but are still covered. For South Carolina titles, you’ll sign as the seller/donor on the back of the certificate and remove your license plate before the car leaves. The SC DMV typically asks you to turn in or transfer plates and update them when the vehicle is no longer in your name.
