⚡HV battery health
When considering a donation, it’s crucial to assess the high-voltage (HV) battery health of your EV. The state-of-health (SOH) of batteries can vary significantly, especially for older models like the Nissan Leaf 1st-gen, which may drop below 50% SOH. A battery that shows poor health might still be donated, but its value will be substantially lower. A high-quality battery report from an OBD-II scanner or your vehicle's manufacturer app is highly recommended to determine the current SOH and any potential replacement costs.
EV-specific pickup logistics
Upon your decision to donate, we’ll arrange a convenient pickup of your EV. Typically, this involves a tow flatbed to ensure safe transport, with attention given to high-voltage disconnect considerations. We also include the charging cable in the pickup. If you're uncertain about your vehicle's condition, a pre-inspection option is available through a local Tesla Service Center or dealer. Non-running EVs can still be accepted, although their value will be evaluated according to their specific condition.
What drives donation value
Several factors will influence the appraised value of your donated EV. Key metrics include battery state-of-health (SOH), odometer reading, body condition, and any advanced features like Autopilot or full self-driving capabilities (FSD) for Teslas. Trim levels can also play a significant role in determining value. Vehicles valued at over $5,000 are subject to IRS Form 8283 Section B, which requires a qualified appraisal for tax deduction purposes.
Charleston EV context
In Charleston, South Carolina, the electric vehicle landscape is growing rapidly, supported by various local and state initiatives. Be aware of potential EV-incentive clawback rules and EV-registration fees that could impact your donation. The region is seeing increasing demand for EVs, thanks in part to the rise in local charging infrastructure and EV-share programs, making your contribution even more valuable in meeting this need.
