2

Choose your pickup day and time window

5 minutes

Our team checks local tow availability in Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville and nearby areas. For calls before early afternoon on weekdays, we can often offer same-day or next-day pickup. To ensure a December 31 slot, contact us by December 27–28. We’ll lock in a date and time window that works for you.

3

Prepare your signed South Carolina title

5–10 minutes

To meet the IRS requirement for a completed donation, you must sign your South Carolina vehicle title over before the tow truck arrives. We’ll walk you through where to sign. No emissions testing, repairs, or detailing are needed. Just clear out personal items and have your keys and title ready for the driver.

4

Free pickup anywhere in the Charleston Metro

Scheduled day

On your scheduled day, the towing partner arrives at your home, business, or storage lot in greater Charleston—whether that’s Daniel Island, West Ashley, or Goose Creek. They’ll verify the title, complete the donation paperwork, and tow the vehicle away at no cost to you, even if it’s non-running or missing inspection stickers.

5

Receive your tax receipt and claim your deduction

Within 30 days of sale

After your car is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098‑C when required) stating the sale price. You use this with your records when filing your federal return and completing Schedule A to claim your charitable deduction for this tax year.

Year-end tax deduction facts

December 31 controls which tax year

For the IRS, your deduction is based on the date the charity actually receives the vehicle, not when you call. A pickup completed on or before December 31 counts for this tax year; January 1 or later counts for next year.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If your donated vehicle is sold for more than the IRS threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098‑C. You attach it to your federal return when you itemize. For vehicles under that amount, a standard written acknowledgment normally satisfies IRS rules.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, the IRS limits your car-donation deduction to the gross proceeds from the charity’s sale of the vehicle. The final sale price appears on your receipt, and that is the amount you may generally claim when you complete Schedule A and itemize.

Written receipt within about 30 days

Once your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind prepares and mails you a written acknowledgment—typically within about 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your tax records as proof of your donation and the amount you can deduct, subject to IRS rules.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To benefit from a car-donation tax deduction, you must itemize your deductions using IRS Schedule A rather than taking the standard deduction. If you’re unsure which approach is better, ask a tax professional to review your situation.

FAQ

What is the last day I can donate my car for this year’s taxes in Charleston?
To claim a deduction for this tax year, your car must be picked up and received by the charity on or before December 31. With Wheels of Hope serving the Charleston Metro, we schedule pickups Monday–Saturday through December 31. Contact us by December 27–28 to secure a December 31 slot in most local areas.
Does just calling in December lock in my tax deduction for this year?
No. The IRS looks at when the charity actually takes possession of your vehicle, not when you schedule. A phone call or online form by itself doesn’t qualify. Your car needs to be picked up and donated by December 31 for this year’s return, so schedule as early as possible in December to avoid holiday delays.
Can you still pick up my car during Christmas week in Charleston?
Yes. Wheels of Hope continues scheduling Monday–Saturday throughout Christmas week and up to December 31 in the Charleston area, subject to tow-truck availability. Same-day or next-day pickups are often possible for weekday calls before early afternoon. Slots near New Year’s Eve fill quickly, so reach out as early as you can that week.
What if my car doesn’t run or has been sitting for a while?
Non-running vehicles are welcome. We’ll arrange a tow at no cost to you anywhere in the Charleston Metro—downtown, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and more. No inspection, repairs, or emissions testing are required. As long as you have a properly signed South Carolina title, we can usually complete the donation and tow it away.
What documents do I need ready before the December 31 deadline?
You mainly need your South Carolina vehicle title signed over to the charity before pickup. Having your registration and photo ID available can help the driver, but the signed title is critical. Make sure personal belongings are removed from the car so the tow can be completed quickly and the donation is finalized by December 31.
How soon do I get my tax receipt after donating my car?
At pickup, you’ll receive initial paperwork confirming the vehicle was donated. After Heritage for the Blind sells the car, they’ll mail you a written acknowledgment, and Form 1098‑C when applicable. This usually arrives within about 30 days of the sale and will list the sale price you generally use when claiming your deduction.
Is my car-donation tax deduction guaranteed and how much can I claim?
Wheels of Hope can’t give tax advice or guarantee how much you’ll save, but your federal charitable deduction is generally tied to the vehicle’s sale price and your personal tax situation. Heritage for the Blind provides the required IRS documentation; you and your tax professional determine how to report the deduction on your return.
